Post 16 Pathways

Post 16 Pathways

There are three fluid and flexible pathways within Post 16, all young people follow a Pathway with aspirational outcomes and progression routes.

Preparation for Further Education and Employment

Young people work towards Functional Skills qualifications in English and Maths, we deliver this from Entry Level 1 through to Level 2. The curriculum is then built around accredited qualifications in Employability, Independent Living and Independent Travel Training through Open Awards.

Over three years, learners will work towards three Open Awards accredited qualifications – Diploma in Further Learning and Employment, Diploma in Independent Living and Certificate in Travelling Independently. This is usually delivered at Entry Level 2 and/or Entry Level 3.

Young people will also work towards their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, completing expeditions and residential experiences across the three years.

There is a strong focus on Further Education and Employment, young people will regularly visit Post 19 education providers and also work towards completing at least one external work placement opportunity. Throughout the three years, they will have various employer engagements and industry visits in order for them to make an informed choice about their future.

Progression routes for young people following this pathway include Further Education and vocational courses at Doncaster College, Dearne Valley College and Doncaster Communication Specialist College. Young people will be prepared for employment with some gaining employment or Apprenticeships/Supported Internships.

Preparation for Independent Living

Young people work towards Functional Skills qualifications where appropriate and follow a practical English and Maths curriculum.

Over three years, learners will work towards Open Awards accredited qualifications – Diploma in Further Learning and Employment, Diploma in Independent Living. This is usually delivered at Entry Level 1 and/or Entry Level 2.

Young people follow an informal Travel Training curriculum that involves safety in their local community and accessing public transport with support.

Young people work towards Duke of Edinburgh’s award, from Bronze Award through to Gold where appropriate over three years. This involves short expeditions and local residentials.

There is a focus on Employability and Independent Living Skills as well as Community Access and Inclusion. Young people are encouraged to make informed choices about their future and places they like to access or visit. Young people will complete internal work placements and where appropriate, supported external work experiences. Over three years, young people will visit a range of Post 19 settings so they can make an informed choice of destination when their Coppice journey ends. Destinations may include Foundation Studies/FLEX at Doncaster College/Dearne Valley College, Doncaster Communication Specialist College or The Ridge Employability College.

Preparation for Community Inclusion

Young people following this pathway will spend the majority of time at Coppice with many opportunities to access their local community.

Over three years, learners may work towards Open Awards accredited qualifications – Diploma in Further Learning and Employment, Diploma in Independent Living. This is usually delivered at Entry Level 1. Where this is not appropriate, young people will work towards pre-entry AQA awards and a informal/semi-formal curriculum that focuses heavily on EHCP outcomes across the Preparing for Adulthood Framework and communication/interaction.

There is a strong focus on supported living skills and community, young people also access internal work placements and where appropriate, external experiences of work, either individually or as part of a small group. Destinations for this pathway include Independent Specialist Provision such as Doncaster Communication Specialist College, Community Learning or a mixed package of education and social care.
